Asbestos Surveys

Asbestos has been used down through the centuries; however, it was only in the 20th century that the full implications of Asbestos related diseases became known. Asbestos can lay dormant in the body from 5 years to 15 years, before it manifests itself.

The Asbestos Register

If you are the owner, leaser, or rent commercial premises you must have an Asbestos Register, this is Government Legislation. Your Asbestos Register should show you have had an Asbestos Survey carried out by a qualified Asbestos Surveyor. Your Asbestos Register will identify if you have had a Management or Refurbishment/Demolition survey.

Management Survey

Management Survey is where the surveyor takes samples of materials and has the samples analysed. The analysis forms the basis of your Asbestos Register, which will also include where the sample was taken from, photographs and advice from the surveyor on the frequency of repeat inspections.

Refurbishment/Demolition Survey

Refurbishment/Demolition Survey is carried out prior to any extension work, large modernisation projects or demolition. This survey actually allows the surveyor to make holes in walls, ceilings and floors, to remove window boards, ceiling tiles and floor tiles to take the materials away for analysis. The information received from the laboratory allows the contractor to have knowledge of where Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM’s) are located, and allows him to get specialist contractors in to remove the Asbestos prior to starting work.
